Once Upon A Time

Within this collection, my goal is to revive the storytelling traditions of our ancestors by employing art to illustrate new mythologies and visualize ancient ones. Stories play a vital role in shaping a people's identity, and for a considerable period, our African identity has been influenced by narratives that do not belong to us. Through "Once Upon A Time", I aspire to present both new and traditional African fairytales that can withstand the test of time. These stories portray African strength and tradition, utilizing art as a means to foster Pan-Africanism. 

This collection takes you on a journey through ancient myths, contemporary tales, and personal narratives. Through this collection, I aim to initiate discussions on how our stories can mold our identity.

Once upon a time, In the heart of Giriama land lived  Mekatilili, a commendable woman who strongly  resisted British rule over her land. Using the sacred Kifudu Giriama funeral dance, she rallied her people to swear oaths of resistance, binding them together to protect their traditions and freedom. Mekatilili possessed mysterious powers from the Giriama shrines, enabling her to sense the land's rhythms and call upon spirits for guidance. Her unwavering spirit and leadership lit the path to resistance, becoming a legend and symbol of unity against adversity in the Giriama land.

Mekatilili Wa Menza: The African Wonder Woman

Once upon a time, In a land where meadows and hills stretched, there lived three remarkable herdsmen: Kairu, Kizza, and Kakuru who were known as the wisest shepherds in the realm, with a shared motto: "One for all, and all for the herd."
Kairu spotted lush pastures, Kizza defended against predators, and Kakuru navigated the unknown. Together, they braved storms, outsmarted wolves, and united neighboring villages.
Their story, a testament to friendship, unity, and unwavering support, reminds us of the incredible feats achievable when hearts are bound by a common purpose. These herdsmen's legend endures, inspiring generations to protect their lands and guard their dreams together.

Once Upon a time, There was a story that was told not by the people, but by the orator. 
They told themselves a story over and over again that they got stuck in their head. For it was a never ending loop of uncertainties.
